The industry splits along one line. Ablative lasers vaporize the surface of the skin outright. Non-ablative lasers leave that surface intact and deliver heat underneath it instead. MOXI is firmly in the second camp — and fractional on top of that, which matters more than most people realize.

"Laser resurfacing" covers treatments that differ enormously in intensity. Knowing where a device sits on this scale tells you almost everything about what to expect — from both the result and the recovery.
Work at or just below the surface. Good for tone, redness and a general freshening. Little to no visible healing.
Passes through the intact surface and heats microscopic columns beneath it. Genuine resurfacing of pigment and texture, built to repeat in a series.
Vaporize the surface itself. The most powerful option for deep wrinkles and significant scarring, and the most disruptive.
A note on honesty: if you have deep, etched wrinkles or significant scarring, non-ablative resurfacing will improve them but will not erase them — and we would rather tell you that at the consultation than have you discover it after four sessions. MOXI excels at pigment, tone and surface texture. For structural change, ablative resurfacing or a different modality entirely may serve you better, and we'll say so.
Three design choices explain everything about how MOXI behaves — the wavelength, the fractional pattern, and the fact that it never breaks the surface.

Instead of treating the whole surface at once, the laser creates a grid of microscopic zones. The healthy, untouched skin between them is the reservoir your body heals from — and the reason recovery is days, not weeks.
Non-ablative means the skin is never vaporized away. Your barrier stays closed, which lowers infection risk, reduces post-treatment care, and lets you return to normal life immediately.
Over the following days, treated pigment migrates upward as microscopic epidermal necrotic debris and sheds. That gritty, sandpaper texture around day three isn't a side effect — it's the pigment physically leaving your skin.
The immediate change is pigment clearance. Underneath, the controlled thermal injury also prompts a slower collagen remodeling response that keeps improving texture over the following weeks.
Because each pass is conservative, results are cumulative. A series of three to four lets your provider adjust settings between sessions based on how your skin actually responded.
Neither is better. They solve different problems for different people, and the right answer depends on what you're treating and what recovery you can actually accommodate.
A useful way to decide: if the thing bothering you is how your skin looks — blotchy, dull, rough, sun-spotted — non-ablative resurfacing is well matched. If it's how your skin is structured — deep folds, pitted scarring — you need something stronger, and we'll refer or recommend accordingly rather than sell you a series that won't get there.
Resurfacing changes the quality of the skin's surface. These are the concerns that respond best.
Years of Texas sun leave scattered pigment, freckling and patchy tone. This is what non-ablative resurfacing does best.
Stubborn and prone to rebound, so it needs a conservative, managed approach paired with sun protection and topicals. Improvement, not cure.
Resurfacing the top layers smooths how skin feels and refines how pores appear — one of the most-requested outcomes.
For skin that reads tired rather than damaged. Clearing accumulated surface damage restores light reflection.
Softens the earliest textural lines and supports overall skin quality. Works alongside injectables rather than replacing them.
Sun damage rarely stops at the jawline. These areas heal more slowly than the face and are treated more conservatively.
The single most common question about resurfacing, answered honestly. Everyone heals a little differently, but this is the typical arc.
Topical numbing for about 30 minutes, then 15–30 minutes of treatment. Afterward your skin feels hot and looks sunburned. Some swelling is normal, especially around the eyes.
Redness and warmth continue and swelling peaks the morning after. Gentle cleanser, bland moisturizer, no actives, rigorous SPF. Most people go to work.
The MEND phase. Skin develops a fine sandpaper texture and starts to flake as treated pigment sheds. It can look temporarily darker and speckled before it clears.
Flaking finishes and the new surface is visible. This is when most patients first notice the tone change.
Collagen remodeling continues quietly underneath, so texture keeps improving well after the pigment change has settled.
Resurfacing removes existing damage; it does not prevent new damage. Daily SPF is what protects the investment — without it, the pigment comes back.
These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Recovery varies with the settings used, the area treated, your skin type and how diligently you follow aftercare. Your provider gives you personalized pre- and post-care instructions.

Sun damage, uneven tone, early textural change or enlarged pores; you want visible improvement but can't disappear for two weeks; you've been told you're not a candidate for more aggressive lasers because of your skin tone.
Active melasma, a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, recent isotretinoin use, a tendency to keloid, or frequent cold sores. None are automatic disqualifiers — they change the plan and sometimes the pre-treatment.
Deep etched wrinkles or pitted scarring needing structural change; a recent tan or sunburn; pregnancy; an active skin infection in the treatment area. We'll postpone or point you somewhere better.

Fractional means the laser treats a fraction of the skin's surface at a time — a grid of microscopic treatment zones rather than the entire area continuously. The intact skin surrounding each zone acts as a reservoir of healthy tissue that speeds recovery. Fully ablative resurfacing treats the whole surface at once: more powerful, far more disruptive.
A CO2 laser is ablative and considerably more aggressive: it can address deep wrinkles and significant scarring in a single treatment, but typically requires one to two weeks of social downtime and carries higher pigment-complication risk, particularly in deeper skin tones. MOXI is non-ablative, works over a series rather than in one session, and trades raw power for a recovery most people can plan around a normal week.

MOXI was designed to be appropriate across a wide range of skin tones, including deeper skin types many aggressive resurfacing lasers can't safely treat. That said, any laser targeting pigment carries some risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and risk varies by individual. Your provider assesses your skin type, pigment history and medications before recommending settings or treatment.
Because MOXI works gradually rather than all at once, a series of three to four treatments spaced several weeks apart is commonly recommended, followed by periodic maintenance. The number depends on how much sun damage or textural change you're treating and the result you're aiming for. That plan is set at your consultation.
