What Causes Acne?

Acne is caused when excess oil (sebum), dirt, bacteria, or dead skin cells clog the skin’s pores. It typically occurs during puberty when a hormone called androgen increases and produces high volumes of sebum. Acne can also result from genetic influence, stress, diet, lifestyle, and pore-clogging cosmetics. Acne can either be inflammatory or non- inflammatory.

How Do We Diagnose Acne?

If you have acne, your dermatology provider can diagnose it by looking at your breakouts. During your appointment, we discuss what type of acne you have and where the breakouts appear on your skin. Your provider determines the right treatment option and educates you on Acne management.
